Windows 7 and 8.1 Update is Windows 10 downloader

Windows 7 and 8.1 Update is Windows 10 downloader

windows-10-downloader-windows-update--

Microsoft has hidden a Windows 10 ad-generator/downloader in a latest security update KB 3139929. This security update is meant for IE11 users who are running Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. So, before installing any Patch Tuesday, take a moment to look at what’s inside.
Microsoft’s Windows 10 updates are often labeled as security updates, feature updates, and bug fixes. While it’s hard to distinguish between a new feature update and a bug fix, the security updates are released as a separate release.
But, the desire to install Windows 10 on more devices has forced Redmond to change the rules and hide Windows 10 download ads in the latest Internet Explorer 11 security patch. If we look at Microsoft’s documentation regarding Patch Tuesday’s KB 3139929 Internet Explorer security update, it also installs a new Windows 10 ad routine called KB 3146449.

“This update adds functionality to Internet Explorer 11 on some computers that lets users learn about Windows 10 or start an upgrade to Windows 10,” Microsoft describes the update.
However, it isn’t clear how does this update affect your browser. Some websites report that after installing the update, IE11 shows you a big Windows 10 upgrade banner if you visit MSN.com.

Other users have already complained that they have been seeing giant Windows 10 pop-ups that prompt them to upgrade Windows 10 when they MSN.com — all this without installing the new IE11 security update. I’ve tried to reproduce this behaviour on my spare Windows 7 PC but failed to do so.
This Windows update was first spotted by InfoWorld.
If this behaviour is exactly the way it’s being reported, it’s a part of Microsoft’s strategy to increase the pace of Windows 10 installations. In the past, it was reported that company is using some shady promotional tactics and the latest saga is the new low.

Snowden: “I Used Free And Open Source Software Like Debian And TOR. I Didn’t Trust Microsoft”

NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden is known to be a long-time advocate of free and open source software. Speaking at an event via video conferencing, he said that transparency of free software convinced him to use TOR, Tails, and Debian, that helped him to expose the secrets of American government.
At the Free Software Foundation’s LibrePlanet2016 conference on Saturday, NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden participated in a discussion regarding free software and security. He joined the talk via video conferencing from Russia.Edward Snowden told that he was able to disclose the secrets of American government and its projects of mass surveillance using free software. The event was being held in an MIT lecture hall and this statement drew a wide round of applause.

Praising the likes of Debian, Tails, and TOR, he said — “What happened in 2013 couldn’t have happened without free software.”
It’s a no hidden fact the free and open source software is used by the activists and journalists to ensure that any government isn’t actively tracking them. In this modern age, the free and open source software have become an important player. Its openness and transparency allow a user to look at the code and policies to ensure the privacy.
I didn’t use Microsoft machines when I was in my operational phase, because I couldn’t trust them. Not because I knew that there was a particular back door or anything like that, but because I couldn’t be sure
— Snowden said.Talking more, Snowden cited the example of the current battle between Apple and FBI. He said that it’s an example of a corporation trying to stand up for its users. However, citizens should not have to rely on companies.

Hidden Reason Behind Facebook Feelings

Hidden Reason Behind Facebook Feelings

World’s biggest social networking company Facebook has rolled out the new Reactions buttons that will allow a user to express its emotions in a better way. But, what is the hidden purpose of Facebook’s new addition? Yes, you guessed it right — it’s all about money and data collection.

Facebook has just rolled out its new ‘Reactions’ buttons globally. These six new emojis — ‘love’, ‘haha,’ ‘yay,’ ‘wow,’‘sad,’ and ‘angry’ — were launched to give people more freedom to express their emotions.

In its Facebook post, the social media company explained that it has been listening to people to receive feedback and bring the right set of reactions. To see the new buttons, all you have to do is just hover over the like button or hold it down. However, just like any other feature on Facebook, the new Reactions buttons serve a dual purpose for Facebook. The company aims to collect data about how you react to smileys and improve your News Feed.
Every time you open your Facebook account, you witness a series of posts and pictures that are a result of one of the world’s most influential and controversial algorithms. Facebook believes that feeding its algorithm more and more data is the key to longevity.
In the past, Facebook’s Like button has been as a key source of data for the company that are used to customize your digital life. If you like more pictures, you’ll be shown more pictures — the same goes for other types of content.
Giving users six reactions allows the company to gather more focused data. It will now tell the company if the people are enjoying the posts, finding them happy, or becoming sad.
In a blog post, Facebook hinted at a similar possibility: “Over time we hope to learn how the different Reactions should be weighted differently by News Feed to do a better job of showing everyone the stories they most want to see.”
Facebook primarily earns its money from advertising and shares the data with advertisers to improve their targeting. Although Facebook’s privacy policy states that it doesn’t share the personally identifiable information about its users, it does share the bulk information of users.

What do you think about the new Reactions buttons? Tell us your views in the comments below.
FBI Forces Apple to Create Backdoor for it' Phones

FBI Forces Apple to Create Backdoor for it' Phones

When you read the headlines like “FBI is forcing Apple to create a backdoor in their products”, what you are really reading is that the FBI is forcing iPhone-maker to use the “pre-existing software update backdoor” present in iPhones. Surprisingly, a backdoor already exists in most software in the form of system updates and the US government is looking to exploit the same.

The story of FBI vs Apple has been making the headlines since the shooting attacks in California in last the December. After FBI’s request, Apple refused to create a software backdoor to allow the law enforcement agency to crack an iPhone of one of the shooters. Apple CEO Tim Cook has justified his decision on multiple occasions and even tagged backdoors as the “software equivalent of cancer”.
But, few of us know that most software already has a backdoor present in them in the form of system updates. Well, give me a moment and let me reframe my words — Most software already has a backdoor in the form of “malicious software update”. In a recent article, Ars has described this issue in detail and listed out various ways by which your government can gain the backdoor access.
By ‘malicious system update’, we are talking about the inauthentic version of the system software that fools your computer and makes it do things that you don’t want to do. Let me introduce you to another term — a ‘targeted malicious software update’ is something that is sent to a particular target’s device, making it hard for anyone to notice it. To perform these malicious intrusions, the attacker needs to fulfill two conditions —
  1. The attacker should be in a position to send the updates
  2. The attacker should be in a position to convince the user that the update is authentic
The third and the most deadly villain of this story is ‘total system compromise’. As the name suggests, an attacker is able to control the device remotely and obtain any kind of data or encryption keys.
These problems exist in almost every software update system. Probably, the software makers thought that they would be able to protect their software against such attacks as they have the authority to push the system updates. Well, they forgot about the scenario where government knocks their doors and demands for a backdoor.
You must have read in our previous articles that FBI is asking Apple to create a backdoor in their products. By this statement, what Apple really means that FBI is forcing it to use the pre-existing software update backdoor present in iPhones. Explaining it further, Ars writes:
Is it reasonable to describe these single points of failure as backdoors? I think many people might argue that industry-standard systems for ensuring software update authenticity do not qualify as backdoors, perhaps because their existence is not secret or hidden in any way. But in the present Apple case where they are themselves using the word “backdoor,” abusing their cryptographic single point of failure is precisely what the FBI is demanding.
I hope that the demands made by the US government acts as a warning to the technology companies and they look for better and secure ways to push updates to their users. Apple has already started to make its iPhone unhackable, but what about the others?

Vaio returns with 3 new Laptops

Vaio returns with 3 new Laptops

Erstwhile Sony brand, Vaio, has taken a big step towards making a comeback in the laptop market. The company just announced three high-end laptops overseas, including two variants of the Vaio Z Flip, the Vaio Z Clamshell and the Vaio S. The Vaio Z Flip is the highlight amongst these, boasting a 13 inch touchscreen QHD display, which can be flipped, just liked in Lenovo’s Yoga series laptops. It’s an expensive laptop though, with a starting price of around $1,799 (approx. Rs. 1,22,000) in the US. There is a cheaper variant as well, priced at $1,499 (approx. Rs. 1,02,000). The Vaio Z Clamshell also starts at the same price as the cheaper variant of the Z Flip. Technically, the company calls all of them the Vaio Z, but the Clamshell and Flip monickers are used to differentiate them for consumers.
Along with its QHD display, the Vaio Z Flip is has an aluminium casing inside and on the top. In addition, the device runs on Intel’s new i7 Skylake processor, with an option for the i5 as well. It can hold 8 to 16GB of RAM and the company claims it has a battery life of 11-12 hours. It has been selling in Japan for a while and has been introduced in the US now. There is no word on whether it will ever make it to India. On the other hand, the Vaio Z Clamshell laptop has a 1080p display, with no touchscreen benefits. It’s build is similar to the Flip, but it can’t be flipped around to be used as a tablet.
The last of the three laptops launched in the US is the Vaio S, which is sold in Japan as the Vaio Pro. It’s somewhat of an old school laptop, hosting both a VGA and ethernet port on its sides.
While none of these laptops have made it to India and aren’t likely to do so anytime soon, the once Sony owned brand has interested Indian consumers in the past. These three laptops, which had first been announced in Japan, compete against the most premium laptops in the market, marking Vaio’s first real move to return to the competition.

Anonymous Brings Down 20 Thai Prison Websites

Anonymous Brings Down 20 Thai Prison Websites

Anonymous group have taken down 20 websites belonging to the Thai prison system on Thursday in protest against death sentences passed by a local court in a controversial case earlier in January. The same hacking crew were the one also launched DDoS attacks against 300 Thai court websites.
This attack is regarding the death sentences given to two Myanmar men for the murder of two British tourists on Koh Tao. It was reported that the 22-year-old Myanmar men were tortured by police and forced to confess to a crime they did not commit and then were railroaded in a botched investigation using questionable DNA evidence.
In a post on their Facebook page the hacktivists from the Blink Hackers Group took responsibility for the attack and listed several hashtags relating to the case of two British tourists murder on the Thai island of Ko Tao.

Anonymous v/s The Lizard Squad

Anonymous v/s The Lizard Squad

It was the sad Christmas day for gamers all around the world!! A lot of people get new PlayStations and Xboxes on Christmas, but this Christmas they bought the game, popped it into the console for online gaming, and what they found? Oh Crap! I can't log on.

It was the notorious hacker group "Lizard Squad" who claimed the responsibility for taking down PlayStation Network, saying it has made unavailable both networks with apparent Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks — intentionally overloading servers by sending a flood of bogus web traffic, which made logging into thePlayStation Network and Xbox Live difficult for most users.

Now Anonymous has declared war against Lizard Group, warning that "now you are all going down." Recently, in response to Lizard Squad launching DDoS attacks on the Tor network, the international activist group Anonymous has leaked the personal details of one of the group's alleged members, warning the hacker collective "Lizard Squad" to "stand down" and stop attacking Tor.
Earlier after the big outage for both Xbox Live and Playstation Network services, both Sony and Microsoft acknowledged the problem, saying that their security teams were working to resolve the issue and get the networks back online.

"We are aware some users are unable to sign into Xbox Live. Our teams are working to resolve the issue. Visit xbox.com/support for status updates," said Sean McCarthy, general manager of Microsoft's Xbox Product Services in a statement to CNN. "We don't share info on the root cause of specific issues."

"We are aware that there have been issues reported with PSN," tweeted Sony's Ask PlayStation account on Christmas Eve. "Thanks for your patience as we investigate."

Giving pause to the attacks on PSN and Xbox live, Lizard Squad said in a tweet that "All your onions are belong to us," referring to Tor's onion logo, and later tweeted that the Tor network is only used by "hackers, miscreants and pedophiles."

The Tor Project released a statement about the attacks, saying "we don't expect any anonymity or performance effects based on what we've seen so far." It said the attackers attempted a "Sybil attack" where "the attackers have signed up many new relays in hopes of becoming a large fraction of the network."

"But even though they are running thousands of new relays, their relays currently make up less than 1% of the Tor network by capacity," it added. "We are working now to remove these relays from the network before they become a threat, and we don't expect any anonymity or performance effects based on what we've seen so far." So hopefully this gets nipped in the trollish bud before anonymity is affected."

Anonymous‏ group warned Lizard Squad in a tweet, saying "People need that service because of corrupt governments." Later, the group confirmed that it was tracking down members of Lizard Squad.

However, the details revealed by the group are yet not confirmed to be legitimate, Anonymous tweeted a link which appears to contain the personal details, including full name, address, phone numbers and passwords, of one of the supposed members behind Lizard Squad.

The group posted a screenshot that appears to be a text conversation between one of its members and one of the members behind Lizard Squad, in which the Lizard Squad member ask the Anonymous‏' member to stop the attacks against them and for their family to be left alone, but Anonymous‏ said in a tweet that they'll not stop.
Whereas, a member of Lizard Squad has claimed that the conversation between Anonymous‏ member and Lizard Squad member is fake.

The group also posted a couple of videos to YouTube in which it -- in its typical dramatic style -- attacked Lizard Squad.

The Lizard Squad’s “Lizard Stresser” Service Runs On Hacked Routers

The Lizard Squad’s “Lizard Stresser” Service Runs On Hacked Routers

Security expert Brian Krebs has analyzed the Lizard Stresser, an attack tool created by the so-called Lizard Squad hacker collective and touted as a test for webmins who needed to see what happens to their services under duress. His discovery? The network of attack computers actually consists of insecure and compromised home routers.
This is the network used to take down the Playstation Network and Xbox Live over the Christmas holiday. With the assistance of a group of security researchers, Krebs found that the Lizard Squad was in control of a large botnet made of hacked routers and other commercial servers.
Writes Krebs:
The malicious code that converts vulnerable systems into stresser bots is a variation on a piece of rather crude malware first documented in November by Russian security firm Dr. Web, but the malware itself appears to date back to early 2014 (Google’s Chrome browser should auto-translate that page; for others, a Google-translated copy of the Dr. Web writeup is here).
The botnet is not made entirely of home routers; some of the infected hosts appear to be commercial routers at universities and companies, and there are undoubtedly other devices involved. The preponderance of routers represented in the botnet probably has to do with the way that the botnet spreads and scans for new potential hosts. But there is no reason the malware couldn’t spread to a wide range of devices powered by the Linux operating system, including desktop servers and Internet-connected cameras.
He also makes some excellent recommendations to ensure router security including changing the default password – a no-brainer – and using OpenDNS to prevent malicious web calls to your router.
This means the Squad, which called the Xbox and Sony hacks a marketing stunt, is essentially selling access to hacked machines as a service.
In short, hundreds, even thousands, of compromised routers are being used to attack servers around the world for good or ill, a bit of news that should give us pause. If anything, we should probably all pay it forward and secure our less tech-savvy friends’ routers for them in preparation for further malware attacks in the same vein.

Seagate Announces 6TB Hard Disk

Seagate Announces 6TB Hard Disk

Seagate sub LaCie has pre-announced a 6TB near line disk drive from its parent and it doesn’t appear to use the slow write shingled magnetic recording technology.

http://i.i.cbsi.com/cnwk.1d/i/tim2/2013/07/08/Seagate_Expansion_3TB.jpg
LaCie’s news came out with the NAB event in Las Vegas, which opened on Friday. There are details of the drive on Seagate’s website, although the drive has not been announced and is not yet available.
The Enterprise Capacity drive has these features:
  • 7,200rpm spin speed,
  • 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6TB capacity points,
  • 128MB cache,
  • encryption option with Secure Instant Erase or SED FIPS 140-2 option,
  • SAS 12Gbit/s and SATA 6Gbit/s interface options and
  • a 25 per cent increase in areal density.
Seagate says the drive has 8th generation technology, that’s gen 8 PMR (perpendicular magnetic recording) technology. It claims its drive “provides a 25 per cent nearline performance boost over competitive offerings,” with “best-in-class random and sequential read/write performance”.
Seagate said it doesn’t yet need to use the lighter gas, which reduces friction and heat. The company used the same perpendicular magnetic recording technology that it has on previous models, but it was able to increase areal density from 831 bits per square inch to 1,000.
“We didn’t have to use helium to get to this capacity, and it’s 25% faster than their helium drive,” said Barbara Craig, a marketing manager with Seagate. “You can rest assured, when we need it [helium] we’ll use it.”

The enterprise drive also has what Craig described as a “humidity sensor” that will allow it to continue functioning in humid environments.
Seagate’s Enterprise Capacity 3.5 HDD v4 is aimed at cloud-based data centers, where near-line storage is king.
The new drive also comes in 2TB, 4TB and 5TB capacities and with either 12Gbps SAS or 6Gbps SATA connectivity.
As with its past enterprise drives, Seagate’s new drive is self-encrypting with the company’s Instant Secure Erase, which overwrites data multiple times for easy drive disposal or repurposing. The drive is also FIPS SED certified.
Seagate’s “Super Parity” error correction firmware with RAID rebuild functionality is located on the drive’s SAS controller, which improves data rebuild times after a drive error. Craig said a drive’s data can be rebuilt “in hours instead of days.”
Craig said the new enterprise drive can sustain 550TB in data writes annually — 10 times the 55TB workloads that Seagate’s best desktop drives can handle.

“This is the fastest-growing segment in the enterprise space,” Craig said. “People today are still trying to use desktop drives for near-line storage applications.”
While Seagate did not release pricing, as it sells most of its enterprise-class drives to storage array makers, Craig did say the drive will be the same price per gigabyte as the previous 4TB capacity model.
